hihi
as im withering away on my bed due to the ailment that has fallen upon me (regular sickness) by the dark reunion, i decided what good time for me to catch up on my shows. i had the sudden urge to watch some anime since i havent properly watched one in many years. maybe to experience the feeling of anime again from middle school, or just to feel some comfort while sick just like i used to in 5th grade. whatever the feeling was, it felt overwhelming ( ꩜ ᯅ ꩜;) so, since i finished the first season of spy x family with my friends, i thought why not catch up since it's at its third season at the moment. i rewatched the first season since i vaguely remembered what happened. as time went on, i noticed some things that caught my eye and i have no one to talk about it with. aka i have too much time on my hands
Language
if yall don't know, im minoring in japanese. so i know a konnichiwa or two ( ¬ᴗ¬). i may be late to the party on a lot of things (just pretend im smart to make me feel good okay? dont hurt my feelings), but it's still fun to point out. first thing first, the language use between each character. since im sick, i didn't pay too much attention to the voices since i was hyper focused on the subtitles. but at some point i started listening and was shocked at a couple things. 1) i can understand the characters (yes im one of those rare crazy people who dont consume japanese media (rarely even unless its music) as a japanese learner) so imagine my surprise when i was like "I CAN UNDERSTAND OH MY GOSH *hacks up a cough*" 2) the formality use between the characters was an interesting way for me to better understand the relationships.
let's start with Anya. bless her heart, but with her cute japanese i can barely understand sometimes just by listening </3 it sounds like how a toddler babbles like "pwease gib anya juice" or "anya take oba da world >:)" she does refer to herself in third person (so cyuute) and talks informal a lot (adorbs). sometimes she uses keigo (formal talk) but tends to mispronounce it time to time. one really cute detail i noticed was in the first season, anya has her name on the door as ANIA and later on it got fixed to ANYA. it just shows her slowly grasping the language. another one is よろしくお願いします yoroshiku onegaishimasu (nice to meet you/ pleased to work with you kind-of-vibe) omg gotta be one of my fav quirks from her. not only she has her toddler babble to it, she talks like how she hears adults say it (like a normal child does) but she messes this phrase so bad its so cute. instead of the correct way, she says よろろすおねがいするます yororosu onegaisurumasu like it's so bad its baffling like how you even mess it up 😭☠️ but it sounds really cute when she says it. it's a mistake that no one would even think to make except anya. i would say the closest translation i could make out of it would be pwea-eazed to will met ya. idk something like that. its a shame english doesn't have the same quirk but she changed the conjugation in the wrong spot at the end and had a completely different made up word in the beginning. same with おはいよございます ohaiyo gozaimasu (good morning) but she'll say it as おはいざいます ohaizaimasu (gudmorn').
can't talk about anya without Damian. damian threw me off a lot just cause the way he speaks to anya. he speaks pretty disrespectful to anya but it's funny to hear it from a 6 year old's mouth LOLOL! of course, he speaks real informal to anya (she does the same). but instead of calling her by her name, he addresses her as お前 o-mae, which is one of the rudest way to refer to someone. it translates to 'you' but think of it in a bully/derogatory way. it's very masculine language and usually used between close friends (which can be interpreted as friendly talk if so). he also calls her 手前 temee, which is even ruder version of お前 o-mae, still refers to as 'you'. damian still uses keigo (formal talk) to most adults and keeps it formal with classmates. i dont recall him being formal to loid when they first met? it's been a while so i probably forgot. but that's what i observed so far.
Yor is very formal. you'll never catch her lacking. always uses formal talk for everyone. like everyone. including her victims. infact, she calls the people she's about to kill お客様 okyaku-sama (customer but in it's highest form of formality). i recall that after she kills someone, she'll go on the phone to talk to her boss and say "the customer has been served" or "i dealt with the customer" in formal talk (divaaa). she uses ~さん san (Mr. Ms.) for everybody, even animals. Mr. Bond, Ms. Anya, Mr. Loid, etc. even when she's thinking in her head she still uses keigo. but i think it stems from her being unconfident, so she puts everyone on a higher level than herself. she talks casual with her brother yuri but still uses some form of politeness to him.
Loid uses a good mix of casualness and formality in his day to day use whether as a spy or being Loid. he speaks casual to anya (uses お前 o-mae to her) franky, and bond. to anyone else he pretty much uses polite speech. when talking to yor, he calls her yor-san. but sometimes when he's talking to fiona or yuri, he says yor or yor-san. honestly im confused sometimes why he does that. i think it depends on the relationship he has with them? maybe to show how close he is with yor (keeping up with the fake marriage persona) or showing respect to her, even if she isn't in the same room as him.
anyways that's all i can remember as a sick person
Loid's Past Life
war is terrible. it was so sad to see him be expressive as a kid and see it change when the bomb hit his city. to see him grow up thinking his friends got killed during the first bomb attack. then see them alive again when he joined the military, only for them to DIE a week later after meeting them. lord i would crash out if that ever happened to me. life was very cruel to him. and now he's kind of emotionless </3 im glad we got to see how him and franky became friends. i forgot franky was from ostania until this flashback happened, only then i realized his convo with fiona (i think?) made more sense when he said he would rather help westalis than his own country. anyways, it was interesting to see how loid developed as a character. he's not even loid, he's 〇〇〇〇. we don't know his real name. he makes me sad :( when he woke up from his flashback and said "where am i? right this is loid's house." what if i strangled myself?
Loid & Anya
ik theyre not blood related BUT THEY ARE TO MEE!!! anya and loid are sooo similar. likeee loid birthed anya from his uterus that's his daughter fr. first of all, loid lied about his age to join the military, anya lied about her age so loid could adopt her. loid was very expressive as a kid and anya is soo expressive. same anger issues, they cry the same way, idk im so soft for their relationship .·°՞(≧□≦)՞°·. he treats her better than how his father treated him and i think him raising anya heals him in a way. all his father did was instill fear and abuse in the household. meanwhile his current home is filled with love and anya feels very comfortable with her parents. /cries/ in any case, we gotta give props for anya keeping up with everything cause she's so smart for a 4 year old. she's doing things thats she would have to know as a 6 year old and is trying her best. that's my anya praise of the day ☆

Country's Language
okay this is the linguist in me that's been bugging me. what even is the language of westalis and ostania? in one episode, damian used english for his report as well as yuri typing in english for transcription. like okay english, sure. another thing is the use of japanese in the world. if they're speaking japanese with the keigo form in mind, then japanese must be the main language right? keigo is used so much that it's hard for me to imagine it the same in other language (if japanese is canon). in the background, they even use romanized version of japanese (examples i remember: chigau instead of 違; nomu instead of 飲む). so does this mean kana and kanji doesn't exist? this is a very western setting, obv hinting a german vibe given that they live in berlint. ppl on the internet are saying "duh they're westerners so they speak german" okay so if that's the case, everyone is trilingual then?? if english is accepted in eden academy as well as Japanese used as spoken language, what is german? i get that most of the kids families come from elites or high ranking military officials so german has to be a must right? and given that ostania and westalis can understand each other, this indicates that they used to be a united country with maybe dialect/accent differences. in one ep, anya was tested on ancient languages and she would've gotten 100 points if she didn't misspell most of them. so does ancient languages refer to like greek or latin? or is it a case people speak japanese (cause that's all the va's know) but officially use english/german for everything? im getting myself confused.
anyways, that's all i have to rant about the show for now.
